Mayor Announces Plan to Revitalize Anacostia Metro site

Mayor and Anacostia Waterfront Corporation Hope to Partner with WMATA to spark development east of the Anacostia River

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams today announced a plan in which he proposes a partnership between the District government and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to revitalize the area around the Anacostia Metrorail station in Southeast. Mayor Williams sent a letter last month to WMATA proposing a plan to create a mixed-use center on the long-neglected site. The proposed development would include District government offices, retail and residences.

"I think this will be a huge step in my ongoing commitment to bring revitalization east of the Anacostia River," said Mayor Williams. "My goal is to stimulate growth in the area around the Anacostia Metrorail site, creating new jobs and new opportunities for our citizens and especially the residents of Ward 8."

In July, Mayor Williams sent a letter to WMATA proposing that the District partner with WMATA to redevelop the Anacostia site as a mixed-use center. Mayor Williams also proposed that the recently-formed Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) locate its headquarters at the site. In addition to the AWC, Mayor Williams invited WMATA to relocate its downtown headquarters to the site as a component of the overall development.

"I believe this could be a wise economic decision and a forward-thinking move for WMATA," said Mayor Williams. "With our downtown office market at its strongest in decades, WMATA could reap the enormous benefits of our vigorous real estate market by relocating its offices to Anacostia."

Mayor Williams also announced that Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry is lending his support to the proposal. Joining Mayor Williams at his weekly press briefing to announce the plan were At-Large District Councilmember Carol Schwartz; Andrew Altman, CEO of the AWC; Dan Tangherlini, Director of the District Department of Transportation and Gladys Mack, Vice Chairman of WMATA.
