Statement of the Shaw Coalition
June 4, 1998

We are grateful and very proud of five councilmembers who stood up for citizens of the District of Columbia by voting against the insidious Mt.Vernon plan for a new D.C. convention center June 2, 1998.

The Mt. Vernon plan is a product of long-standing government fraud and abuse saddling taxpayers with 34 years of debt for 24 years of assured obsolescence. And mutual assured destruction of the neighborhood called Shaw.

With this vote, Councilmembers Sharon Ambrose (Ward 6), David Catania (At-Large), Kevin Chavous (Ward 7), Hilda Mason (At-Large), and Kathy Patterson (Ward 3) showed courage, conviction, and a commitment to the citizens that is rare in American politics, not to mention this city

Citizens will not forget them.

Nor will we forget those councilmembers and candidates who have cynically sold the citizens interests for a few sorry shillings. The Shaw Coalition — now stronger, louder, bolder — looks forward to the next round of debate.
