Washington, D.C. — Russell A. Smith, former staff director of the Subcommittee on the District of Columbia, U.S. House of Representatives Government Reform Committee, will become the Board of Education’s new Executive Director as of March 3rd, 2003. Mr. Smith, who grew up in the District and graduated from Anacostia Senior High School, is an alumnus of both Princeton University and the Maxwell School of Public Policy of Syracuse University.
Prior to his tenure on Capitol Hill, Smith served as Secretary to the District’s City Council, D.C. Auditor, and Chief of Staff to the District of Columbia Financial Responsibility and Management Assistance Authority (Control Board) respectively.
Board of Education President Peggy Cooper Cafritz is eager for Smith to join the Board. “Russell Smith’s arrival will further our quest to be the best Board of Education in the country,” she said. Board of Education Vice President Mirian Saez concurred, “Mr. Smith brings many talents to the Board. I am confident he will enable the Board to take the next step in our reform of the school system.”
“I welcome this opportunity to assist President Cafritz and the Board to quicken its reform of the school system,” Smith said.
Russell Smith replaces Paula Perelman as the Board’s Executive Director.
