STATEMENT OF BOARD OF EDUCATION PRESIDENT PEGGY COOPER CAFRITZ REGARDING THE RESIGNATION OF CHARLES LAWRENCE AND ROGER WILKINS FROM THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BOARD OF EDUCATION"With the resignations of Charles Lawrence and Roger Wilkins, I hope that Mayor Williams will act speedily to appoint new Board of Education members. Intellectual mettle, clarity of thinking, and passion for educational equity as demonstrated by both Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Wilkins are characteristics needed in their replacements. Mr. Lawrence, a widely published legal scholar and professor of law at Georgetown University, brought to the Board vast knowledge and deep integrity. Mr. Lawrence is also a former principal of a charter school in the Roxbury community in Boston, and the founder of the Federation of Boston Community Schools. The resignation of Mr. Wilkins, our eminence grise, will deprive the Board of consistent wise counsel. Author, editor and professor of American culture at George Mason University, Mr. Wilkins serves on the board of the Education Trust – the leading urban education think tank in the country. As the Board President, I look forward to warmly receiving the new appointees and working with them on the reform plan we have adopted for this school system. I am sure that Mayor Williams will seek the highest caliber of individuals. As the Mayor considers candidates for the positions, I urge him to replicate the breath and depth of skills that Messers. Lawrence and Wilkins brought to their service of the children of the District of Columbia." |
