Mayor Williams Defers Award of Animal Shelter Contract
Directs Office of Corporation Counsel to Review Bid Process
Statement from Mayor Williams
After many months of negotiation in furtherance of a
published request for proposals in connection with the future operation
of the District's animal shelter, the DC Office of Contracting and
Procurement announced the tentative award of a one-year renewable
agreement with the successful bidder last week. In light of the many
questions that I have received on this matter subsequent to the
announcement of the award, I have directed the Office of Contracting and
Procurement to take the steps necessary to defer the implementation of
this contract - and the interim "letter contract" awarded to
the same party - pending a review by the Office of Corporation Counsel.
I want to assure that the bid process was conducted
properly and that all District laws and procedures were followed. In the
interim, the Department of Health will continue to operate the facility
utilizing full-time and temporary staff and contractors. I share the
concerns that many of our residents have for the safety and welfare of
animals. I am confident that the care of the animals brought to this
facility will not be compromised as the process moves forward.
