NORTON CRITICIZES MAYOR FOR UNBALANCED POLITICAL STRATEGY
April 19, 2002- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today made the following statement:
A Mayor of the District of Columbia must carefully balance his positions and actions between two parties but, the operative word is "balance." The Mayor's statements reported today fail to achieve that balance. His job is to further the interests of the District by working with Republicans without alienating Democrats and working with Democrats without alienating Republicans. It does not help a Mayor or the city in a closely divided Congress to appear to be a short-term opportunist. Democrats have gone out of their way to help the District and Ms. Morella and many Republicans deserve credit for their support as well. A thoughtful, political leader could have found ways to express appreciation for helpful actions by Republican members without throwing Democrats over the side. No one has had to work more closely with a Republican Congress or Ms. Morella than I have. It is wrong to leave the impression that to do so one has to appear to abandon your best friends, your party, and those who have been most loyal to your principles.
