OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2002 |
Contact: SHARON GANG 202-727-5011 CARLTON PRESSLEY (Religious Affairs) 202-727-1750 |
"I selected Rev. Pressley as my senior advisor for religious affairs because he brings a spirit of inclusion to the office of religious affairs," said Mayor Williams. "He can build coalitions and he can bring people together, all of which is needed in a city as diverse as Washington, DC."
Rev. Pressley serves as the primary representative and liaison between the Mayor and the District's religious communities. The Office of Religious Affairs also facilitates access to public and private programs that serve the needs of the faith community in such areas as public safety, education, economic development, human services, public health, transportation, education and multi-cultural development.
Rev. Pressley obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University and a Masters of Theology from the Charles H. Mason School of Religion in San Diego. He received a law degree from the National University of San Diego School of Law. Prior to joining the Williams Administration, Pressley was president and CEO of Premier Growth Investments, a 'company dedicated to providing home and land acquisitions and sound financial and management counsel.' From August 2000 until April 2001, Rev. Pressley was appointed by President Clinton to serve as director of communications for the undersecretary for technology at the U.S. Department of Commerce.
In reorganizing his interfaith council, Mayor Williams solicited suggestions from dozens of religious groups with representation in the District. He subsequently appointed 65 pastors representing 35 different religions to the council. This diverse group then selected Pastor Edwon Brown, who currently serves as senior pastor of the District's Mount Sinai Baptist Church, as their chairman. Rev. Brown has also pastored the Tried Stone Baptist Church of Mt. Clemens, Mich. and Holy Cross Baptist Church of Detroit.
"Pastor Brown is a leader and a coalition-builder who works well with individuals of all faiths," said Mayor Williams. "There is no better proof of this than his election as chairman of this varied group."
Reverend Carlton N. Pressley, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, answered the call to preach in October of 1990 and was ordained by the Honorable Bishop George Dallas McKinney and the ordination board in June of 1994. He is President and CEO of Premier Growth Investments, LLC.

He obtained a law degree from the National University of San Diego School of Law in California and further studied Law at the University of Rome School of Law in Italy and the University of Regensburg in West Germany.
Reverend Pressley's work experience includes service in the U.S. Attorney's Office, the District Attorney's Office, the Public Defender's Office and the Lieutenant Governor's Office. He was the Deputy Campaign Manager for the Committee to Elect Robin Hudson to the North Carolina Court of Appeals and served as Legislative Counsel to Senator Frank W. Ballance. During the second term of United States President Bill Clinton, President Clinton appointed Reverend Pressley to serve in his administration as Director of Communication to the Under Secretary of Commerce. Currently, Reverend Pressley serves as a senior advisor to the Mayor of Washington, DC.
