Mayor Fenty Taps Alan Y. Lew to Lead School Facilities Modernization
Office, Names New CEO for DC Sports & Entertainment Commission
Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced that Alan Y. Lew, chief
executive officer of the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission (DCSEC),
will serve as executive director of the newly created Office of Public
Education Facilities Modernization for DC Public Schools. It was also
announced that Gregory A. O'Dell will likely replace Lew as CEO of the
DCSEC. To help ensure continuity in ongoing projects, particularly the
completion of the city's new stadium, Fenty also announced that Lew will
be appointed as a member of the DCSEC. Lew plans to start reviewing
current school modernization projects on Monday and will begin a
transition period at the DCSEC.

Executive Director, Office of Facilities Modernization
Allen Y. Lew has been nominated to serve as the executive director of
the Office of Facilities Modernization. The position and office were
created as part of the Mayor's education reform legislation, which went
into effect this week. Lew joins the Fenty administration after
succesfully serving as chief executive officer of the District of Columbia
Sports and Entertainment Commission since 2004. Immediately upon his
arrival to the Commission, he led an intensive effort to renovate RFK
Stadium. The RFK Stadium renovation was completed on time for the 2005
inaugural baseball season and exceeded District of Columbia employment and
Local, Small and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise contracting goals.
Under Mr. Lew's leadership, the DCSEC expanded its mission of athletic
field and recreational facility development in the District by completing
multi-purpose sports complexes at Ft. Greble Park in Ward 8 and
Kenilworth-Parkside in Ward 7.
Prior to joining the Commission, Mr. Lew served as managing director
and then acting general manager and chief executive officer of the
Washington Convention Center Authority. There, he led the development of
the award-winning Washington Convention Center, which opened in March
2003. He is widely credited for the masterful orchestration of hundreds of
architects and contractors, federal and local requirements, a successful
LSDBE program and innovative apprenticeship training programs, to deliver
the largest and most challenging public works project in District
history-on budget and schedule.
From 1992 to 1994, Mr. Lew was vice president of Capital Programs for
the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp., where he oversaw a $3.2
billion design and construction effort. The Health and Hospitals Corp.
managed the largest municipal hospital system in the nation.
From 1988 until 1990, he served as Vice President of Rose Associates,
Inc., a New York based private commercial office and residential real
estate development and management company with holdings in Washington, DC,
Boston, New York and other east coast locations. At Rose Associates, Mr.
Lew was associated with the firm's large scale commercial and residential
development ventures in the New York region.
From 1983 until 1988, Mr. Lew was the Executive Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New
York and in 1986 was appointed Acting President and Chief Executive
Officer of both the New York Convention Center Operating Corporation and
the New York Convention Center Development Corporation. Mr. Lew was
instrumental in turning around one of the largest and most controversial
public works project in New York.
Mr. Lew is a product of New York City's public education system. He
graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He earned a Bachelor of
Science degree and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the City College
of New York School of Architecture. He earned a Master of Science in
Architecture and Urban Design degree from the Columbia University Graduate
School of Architecture and Planning.
Gregory A. O'Dell
Chief Executive Officer, District of Columbia Sports and Entertainment
Commission Gregory A. O'Dell was named to serve as chief executive
officer of the District of Columbia Sports and Entertainment Commission.
O'Dell currently serves as the chief development officer for the Fenty
administration in the office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic
Development. Mr. O'Dell is primarily responsible for stimulating and
promoting economic development for the District, and in particular,
leveraging District assets to promote and ensure vital development that
best meets the needs of the citizens of the District of Columbia.
Prior to joining the Deputy Mayor's Office, Mr. O'Dell was the managing
principal and majority owner of the Clemens Consulting Group, where he
provided consulting services to various clients throughout the life cycle
of their development projects. He provided consulting and financial
oversight to the DCSEC for the $611-million design-build baseball stadium
for the Washington Nationals.
Prior to his work at the Clemens Consulting Group, O'Dell was a senior
manager with BearingPoint, a multi-billion dollar management and IT
consulting firm. At BearingPoint, O'Dell was the practice lead for
BearingPoint's Construction Advisory Services practice, providing myriad
construction and development advisory services to both public and private
clients. While at BearingPoint, Mr. O'Dell provided consulting services
for the $850 million, 2 million square-foot convention center for the
Washington Convention Center Authority. During his time at BearingPoint,
he also provided consulting and financial oversight through the entire
project life cycle. In addition, he provided consulting and oversight on
the $24-million RFK Stadium renovation project in time for the inaugural
season of the Washington Nationals.
Mr. O'Dell received a Bachelor of Arts in finance and government from
Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He also holds a
professional certification in project management from the Project
Management Institute. |
