DDOT ANNOUNCES NEW ACTING DIRECTOR EMEKA C. MONEME

Former DDOT Official Rejoins Agency after Serving at WMATA

The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced the start of its new acting director - Emeka C. Moneme, appointed by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty.

Mr. Moneme is a public management and finance professional with years of experience developing and implementing corporate strategy for public and private sector organizations. The majority of his experience has been in the transportation sector, primarily the highway and transit industries. He most recently served as the Chief of Staff for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

"I am thrilled to rejoin many of my former colleagues at DDOT," said Moneme. "DDOT is an agency that represents the very best of the District government. Nonetheless, I believe there is more progress to be made - and that there's room for fresh ideas and new energy. I look forward to continuing to build an agency that is well respected and works to serve the transportation needs of our citizenry."

Emeka began his career with the District of Columbia government in 2000, with what was then the Department of Public Works (DPW). He worked closely with the transportation director to develop the management case and legislative proposal for the creation of a stand-alone Department of Transportation, and then helped facilitate its implementation.

In 2006, Emeka joined WMATA as Chief of Staff. In this role, he served as the chief management advisor to the General Manager and worked closely with other WMATA senior executives to coordinate the Authority's overall business strategy and identify and implement new initiatives.

Mr. Moneme holds a B.S. degree in Aeronautics from Miami University (1995) and a Masters of Urban Planning from the University of Cincinnati (2000). He and his wife, Celeste, have four children. Mr. Moneme remains "acting" director pending City Council confirmation.
