Government of the District of Columbia Executive Office of the Mayor Office of Communications
Tillery to Serve as Interim Director of Health Department(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced today that he is appointing Deputy Mayor for Operations, Herbert R. Tillery, as Interim Director of the DC Department of Health. During this interim period, Mr. Tillery is charged with stabilizing the organization by improving the department's basic infrastructure, administrative functions and employee morale, while the Administration searches for a permanent director. Former director, James A. Buford, will be leaving the District government. The Mayor appreciates the support Mr. Buford has provided during his tenure with the District. Over the last few years, the Department of Health has been challenged with critical healthcare issues including the anthrax emergency, ensuring timely immunizations of school age children, nursing home regulation and most recently the District's lead crisis. City Administrator Robert C. Bobb conducted a thorough assessment of the organization and recommended many management and organizational changes to improve the department. Mayor Williams and the City Administrator are confident in Mr. Tillery's ability to effectively lead the organization during this transitional period. A national search for a permanent director of the Department of Health is underway. Mayor Williams is looking for an individual to lead the department in a new direction and looks forward to having permanent leadership in place by early summer. The Department of Health is responsible for such programs as the Healthcare Alliance, Medicaid and Substance Abuse Services. |
