PRESS RELEASE
Jonathan R. Rees, candidate for Ward 3 DC City Council if elected will immediately propose legislation that will toughen our ZERO TOLERANCE LAW concerning domestic violence whereby any act of physical violence against a Woman or Child will result in a first offense with:
- A minimum and mandatory jail term of thirty (30) days and no less;
- A one (1) year probationary period following release from jail;
- That a convicted abuser will be required during this one (1) year probationary period to obtain through the Dept. of Mental Health both monthly psychological counseling and anger management therapy; and
- An additional sixty (60) day jail term if the convicted abuser fails to attend the required psychological and anger management conditions of their probation.
Tougher sentencing will be proposed if a person has a history of violence against Women and Children.
Sadly, while we have laws in place to address this issue, they are not tough enough and a perpetrator usually will be released after arrest and often never serves any jail time. |
