PRESS RELEASE
Council of the District of Columbia
Council Announces Establishment of Policy Advisory Council, Selection of Dr. Alice Rivlin as ChairToday, D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray announced the establishment of the Office of Policy Analysis and the Policy Advisory Council, which will serve to advise the Policy Office. This office has been formed as a centralized office of the Council of the District of Columbia with the mission to provide comprehensive, nonpartisan, and objective research and analysis on defined legislative/policy issues to members of the Council. “This office both enhances and contributes to a more informed legislature,” said Chairman Gray. “Consequently, the result is enhanced policy creation and development.” Chairman Gray announced that Dr. Donna Cooper has been appointed as the Director of the Office of Policy Analysis. Chairman Gray also introduced Dr. Alice Rivlin of the Brookings Institution as Chair, and lauded her leadership and previous contributions to the District. “Dr. Rivlin has lent her knowledge and expertise to matters concerning the District of Columbia. We are honored that she has once again agreed to provide her considerable skills to support our great city.” Chairman Gray also discussed the technology enhancements recently added to the Council Chambers, hearing rooms and corridors. “In our ongoing effort to build upon a more transparent and open government, we have updated technology at the Council so that all rooms, not just the 4th and 5th floor Chambers, but also the hearing rooms, are equipped with cameras so that the public can have the opportunity to view additional Council proceedings such as mark-ups and roundtables,” said Gray. “Also, each Councilmember's station on the dais is now equipped with timers and monitors to view PowerPoint presentations and video conferences. Additionally, the chamber and the hearing rooms have monitors stationed outside of each room so that the public can view proceedings without entering the room. We want the public to have every opportunity to observe its legislature.” These are the highlights of a number of technological upgrades. Finally, Chairman Gray announced this briefing as the first of monthly press briefings to inform the media and the public of the agenda for each month’s Legislative Session and other matters. |
