Kevin Chavous

TALKS THE TALK

“Although he’s an expert at the art of campaigning — spouting, smiling, touching, flirting — Chavous is all tease and chase. Once he’s captured the prize, he loses interest. His enthusiasm wanes. He disappoints.” (City Paper, August 28, 1998)

But Doesn’t

WALK THE WALK

Kevin Chavous was not there for DC residents:

  • As councilman, Chavous missed more than 500 legislative votes and dozens of legislative hearings on issues of critical importance to DC residents.
  • From 1993-1994, Chavous missed over 1/3 of all Council votes.
  • Between 1995 and 1996, Chavous missed 26 of 42 Council meetings (a disgraceful 39% attendance rate).
  • Even during the current 1997-1998 Council session, while he is asking for your primary vote, Chavous missed 100 Council votes on the key issues that affect your life.
  • Not counting the “Dinosaur Designation Act,” and other ceremonial acts, Chavous introduced only 21 bills in his six years on the council — an average of less than four pieces of legislation per year.
  • Chavous is the Council member with oversight of our DC public schools which opened three weeks late in fall of 1997 — causing parents to either miss work or be forced into expensive emergency childcare. The school crisis burdened many families, but Chavous never held a single hearing to help solve it.
  • Chavous’ record has been so poor that his own Council staff have quit in response to his failures.

“There were so many things we needed done that he didn’t get done for us.” — Charles Cotton, treasurer of Chavous’ 1996 council campaign

“Based on his record to date, I don’t think Kevin has earned the right to be mayor.” — Anthony Robinson, former Chavous Chief of Staff
