Kathy Henderson will advocate for:
- Monthly meetings between school board members and parents. Involved parents are better
parents.
- School-wide aftercare, assuring children are properly supervised beyond 3:15 p.m.
- Integrating information technology into daily learning. It is not enough to place
computers in the classrooms, our children must be taught to use them.
- Implementing phonics based instruction during the elementary years, providing a solid
foundation for reading success.
- Establishing an effective evaluation process for our principals and teachers, retaining
only the committed for our children.
- Honoring DCPS's commitment to paying teachers and school personnel on time.
- Establishing strong community partnerships; particularly between the Department of
Employment Services and vocational education programs, offering apprenticeship
opportunities for youth.
- Continuing to reduce teenage pregnancy, underage drinking and truancy. Implementing
school-wide art and music education.
- Decentralizing the procurement process, allowing principals to obtain books and supplies
our children need to learn.

Kathy Henderson is dedicated to serving her community and improving the lives of
citizens. She refuses to simply complain about problems in her community. Instead, Ms.
Henderson has consistently demonstrated leadership by tackling problems with a can do
attitude and compassion. Ms. Henderson discovered the ,joys of giving to her community
while serving as a member of AMERICORPS*VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America), our
country's premier service organization. While an AMERICORP member Ms, Henderson
successfully coordinated a literacy program for first through third graders, at sixteen
targeted assisted schools in the District. Later, she became a Project Site Director for
the program. Under her leadership students reading scores across the city went up. Ms.
Henderson has been identified for a job well done by the Corporation for National Service,
the organization that administers the AMERICORP*VISTA program. She is currently part of
their national advertising campaign, celebrating individuals that make a real difference
in the community.
Kathy Henderson continues to make a difference in her community by serving as a
proactive Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in Ward 5. Disturbed by the profusion of
trash, nuisance properties and drug dealers in her Kingman Park community, Ms. Henderson
works tirelessly to combat problems in her Single Member District (SMD 51310).
Underscoring her training in biology, Kathy Henderson also found time to create a
community garden introducing children and her neighbors to ecological beautification.
Ms. Henderson serves as a tireless advocate for her community and will bring the same
commitment to the school board. Her Performance highlights include:
- Creating advertising materials, preventing pesticide poisoning in children, while
working for the Environmental Protection Agency
- Successfully coordinating a literacy program for first through third graders in sixteen
targeted assisted District schools
- Serving as Education Co-Chairperson of Mayor Williams Complete Count Committee, assuring
that children and citizens were properly counted during Census 2000
- Serving as an At-Large member of the Democratic State Committee
- Serving as a Delegate for Vice President Al Gore
- Serving as President of the Board of Directors for CitiWide Computer Training Center, a
non-profit dedicated to providing computer training to youth and adults

for all children and citizens in Wards S and 6. With your support District schools will
